Chimpanzees, DRC 2016

MaryWhile we were travelling through South Africa, after our job for Chimp Eden, we got into contact with Centre the Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro, a sanctuary helping over 130 animals. In short Lwiro. On short notice, the
y were looking for managers on the ground for a minimum of six months. A very exciting opportunity again as they have various very interesting projects in a vulnerable area.

Animal and people work

Lwiro is a primate sanctuary, but also has community projects for former child soldiers and young victims of sexual abuse. As you might know sexual abuse is used as a tactical weapon in the conflict in DRC. Besides being despicable, it also makes sure that the victims become oJessicautcasts in their own society and have nowhere to go. Lwiro has a programme in which they learn how to be a child again and learn how to love and play, with help of the animals in the centre. It will also give them a goal in life and the possibility to regain their place in society. So a very welcome and helpful program.

From chimpanzee introductions to fundraising

We will help raise funds for diverse projects, apply for grants, improve online marketing , oversee building of enclosures, consult on and execute animal introductions, training staff, start an enrichment programme, share our knowledge of animal releases and help to prepare and implement a release program, extend or upgrade education programs and all that comes on our path.

People and animals need your support

The DRC is not free of danger in the aftermath of a war that killed millions, it’s a poor country and both animals and people are in desperate need of a helping hand. It’s still unstable. This results in many problems for the local communities and people, but also for the animals. Lwiro is doing a great job in protecting the animals
and helping the people. Yet because of the instability in DRC, there is not much income via tourism or volunteering for thMarthae centre. Because of this it is also hard for Lwiro to raise the so much needed funds. Therefore we have decided to take this position and challenge on without salary for the first six months. We will pay for our own expenses and flight tickets, Lwiro will arrange food and board. With the Lwiro team, our work and hopefully your support as well we will keep Lwiro going in 2016 and beyond.
